One goal of the devastations that began in 1986 was to destroy the “slum” image of Tarlabaşı. 167 of the registered buildings were destroyed, but Tarlabaşı did not survive from collapse. In the 1980s, the one way direction of traffic on Istiklal Street has created depressed areas in this environment as it reduces traffic congestion to a certain extent and reduces accessibility to Taksim from Tunel. One of the important objectives of the project was to separate Tarlabaşı and Beyoğlu. Despite all this, Tarlabaşı is today a typical example of “slum” features and has accelerated the collapse of Tarlabaşı.
